Betting on the Physical World: Andreessen Horowitz Launches $1.1B Fund for AI Hardware
Silicon Valley venture capital has definitively moved beyond pure software into the physical world. On August 29, 2026, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) closed the fundraising for its new $1.1 billion `Machine Age Fund`.

This is the first dedicated hardware fund in a16z’s history. The capital focus has shifted from training new LLMs to solving the physical bottlenecks of AI infrastructure: specialized chip design, high-speed memory production, optical networking, data storage, and industrial robotics (Physical AI). For macroeconomics, this is a vital maturity signal: venture giants have recognized that software algorithms have outpaced the physical capacity of data centers and power grids. Investing in "hardware" is becoming the only way to unlock the next phase of technological growth.
