Cultural Protectionism: Oscars Ban AI Performers and Generated Scripts
Hollywood is going on the deep defensive against algorithms. On May 2, 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences updated the Oscar regulations, strictly limiting the use of AI.

Under the new rules, acting and writing categories remain the exclusive prerogative of humans. Neural network-generated performances and LLM-written scripts are disqualified from receiving awards. This is a major precedent of institutional protectionism in the creative industry. While technologies like Kling AI devalue video content production, the Academy is trying to artificially preserve the monopoly of human talent and protect guild jobs from total automation.
