Amazon: €21 Billion for Sovereign AI in Spain
On March 2, 2026, Amazon announced a colossal €21 billion investment to expand AWS data centers in Spain. This is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of European IT.

The reason for such capital injection is regulatory pressure. The European AI Act and data sovereignty requirements make it impossible to train models and process corporate telemetry on servers in the US. To avoid losing the European B2B market, American hyperscalers are forced to build physical infrastructure locally. Spain was not chosen by chance: it has relatively cheap land and great prospects for green energy, which is critically needed to power hungry AI clusters.
