AMD and OpenAI Announce Strategic Partnership for 6 GW GPU Deployment

AMD and OpenAI announced a landmark multi-year partnership on October 6, 2025, designed to diversify the hardware foundation for OpenAIs future models. The agreement includes the supply of three generations of AMD Instinct accelerators, totaling up to 6 gigawatts of power; the first 1 GW deployment phase, based on MI450 chips, will begin in the second half of 2026. A key element of the deal is a warrant that gives OpenAI the right to purchase up to 160 million shares of AMD (about 10% of the company) as supply milestones are met. This structure closely aligns the financial interests of both companies. For OpenAI, this is a strategic move to reduce its dependence on NVIDIA and secure supply for massive projects like "Stargate." For AMD, it is the biggest win in the AI accelerator market, solidifying its status as NVIDIAs main competitor and projected to bring in tens of billions of dollars in revenue.
