Anthropic Strengthens Governance: Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar Appointed
On January 21, 2026, Anthropic announced the appointment of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar to the Long-Term Benefit Trust. This is an independent body created to oversee the company's mission and prevent dangerous AI usage. Cuéllar, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of California and President of the Carnegie Endowment, brings unique expertise in law and international governance to the Trust.

He replaces Zachary Robinson (CEO of the Centre for Effective Altruism). The rotation within the Trust is an indicator of the maturity of Anthropic's governance structure. The company demonstrates to investors and regulators that AI safety issues are overseen by individuals with impeccable reputations and government experience, not just technocrats.
