Anthropic CEO: Selling Chips to China is a Strategic Mistake

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, spoke sharply about export controls in a Bloomberg interview on January 20, 2026. He called the idea of selling advanced AI accelerators to China "crazy," even if referring to stripped-down versions.

According to Amodei, modern training methods (post-training, fine-tuning) allow for the efficient use of even limited hardware. Any shipment of high-performance chips to the PRC, he says, undermines the national security of the US and its allies, accelerating China's achievement of parity in AGI. This statement comes amidst debates over blocking Nvidia H200 shipments.
