Hardware Sovereignty: ASML Pours €1.3B into Mistral to Build 1 GW of AI Capacity
Europe’s response to the US technological dictate (Pax Silica) has moved into the physical realm. On August 16, 2026, the global leader in lithography equipment, the Dutch company ASML, invested €1.3 billion in the European AI startup Mistral. The company’s valuation soared to €12 billion.

This deal carries colossal geopolitical significance. The strategic goal of the partnership is to deploy 1 gigawatt (1 GW) of fully sovereign computing capacity within the European Union by 2030. Cut off from cheap Chinese inference and unwilling to be totally dependent on American data centers, Europe is forced to build its own "silicon shield." The capital injection from ASML guarantees Mistral priority access to the most advanced semiconductors, transforming the startup from an open-source model developer into an infrastructure hyperscaler on a continental scale.
