Open Source Coalition: Microsoft and Big Tech Publicly Support Open-Weight AI
The industry is splitting into two irreconcilable ideological camps. On July 27, 2026, Axios reported that major technology corporations (including Microsoft) publicly voiced their support for open-weight AI architectures.

This industry consensus is directed against the lobbying efforts of closed-loop labs (such as OpenAI and Anthropic), which are trying to push strict bans on publishing the source code of frontier models through the Senate under the pretext of "national security." Microsoft’s position is particularly telling: despite its multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI, Satya Nadella’s corporation is defending the open segment (by developing its own SLMs). Big Tech understands that a total regulatory ban on open-weight will kill innovation in the B2B segment and leave the market vulnerable to open Chinese models that are already being freely exported to the Global South.
