On August 19, 2025, the Government of Canada signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Canadian AI firm Cohere Inc. to accelerate the growth of a domestic AI ecosystem and internal government AI services. The agreement aims to support Made-in-Canada technologies, strengthen digital sovereignty, and boost Canada’s innovation and export capabilities. It also includes promoting research infrastructure, responsible AI standards, and developing national AI talent. Ministers emphasized building “sovereign AI” domestically.
