Academic Split: China Officially Boycotts NeurIPS Conference

On March 27, 2026, the "Silicon Curtain" officially fell on the scientific community. The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) announced a full institutional boycott of NeurIPS, the world's leading artificial intelligence conference.

The catalyst was the organizers' new compliance rules, strictly prohibiting the acceptance of scientific papers from entities under US sanctions (SDN lists). This is an unprecedented blow to the concept of Open Science. China is de facto refusing to share its research with the West. Given the US Congress's fears (voiced on March 23) about China's dominance in open-source models and robotics, this boycott cements the creation of two completely isolated, non-overlapping scientific ecosystems in the field of AI.
