Symmetrical Response: China Imposes Export Controls on Advanced AI Models
The geopolitical curtain surrounding artificial intelligence is closing from both sides. On October 16, 2026, the PRC Ministry of Commerce published a draft expanding the list of technologies banned or restricted for export. The list includes 40 items, 23 of which directly relate to AI: large language models (LLMs), intelligent agents, and compute cluster networking technologies.

This move is a classic macroeconomic counterstrike by Beijing in response to Washington's semiconductor embargoes. Having realized that their algorithmic architectures (e.g., from DeepSeek or Moonshot) have achieved parity with American ones, PRC authorities are blocking their transfer to Western companies. An exception is made only for public open-source. For the global B2B market, this means the fragmentation of supply chains: transnational corporations will no longer be able to freely move AI solutions between their Asian and Western branches, doubling the costs for the parallel development of sovereign software.
