China Tightens Customs Checks on Imported Nvidia AI Chips

Reuters reported on October 10, 2025, that Chinese authorities have tightened customs controls at the countrys key ports for imported Nvidia AI chips. The more thorough inspections target all advanced semiconductors, including Nvidia models specifically designed for China (H20, RTX 6000D) that comply with U.S. export restrictions. This move has a dual purpose. First, to curb the potential smuggling of more powerful, sanctioned chips. Second, and more strategically important, to create additional import hurdles, thereby actively pushing Chinese tech companies like Alibaba and Tencent to switch to domestically produced AI accelerators. This measure is part of Beijings broader policy to achieve technological sovereignty and reduce dependence on American technologies in the critical field of artificial intelligence.
