Demis Hassabis: AGI is 5-8 Years Away

On February 18, 2026, at the India AI Impact summit, Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis voiced a new forecast: the creation of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is expected within the next 5-8 years.

Hassabis emphasized that we are still in the stage of "patchy" technologies. The main challenges on the path to AGI are the ability of models for long-term planning and stable learning without catastrophic forgetting. This statement sets the vector for R&D departments for an entire decade.
