Demis Hassabis: AI Can Cut Drug Discovery Time from Years to Months

Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis made an optimistic statement about the potential of AI in medicine in an interview with Bloomberg Television on September 12, 2025. According to him, thanks to modern AI methods like AlphaFold for protein structure prediction, the stage of discovering and identifying potential drug candidates can be reduced from several years to just a few months. However, as other experts noted in the same report, this does not mean that a finished drug will be on the market in months. The longest and most expensive stage remains the multi-year human clinical trials, which are necessary to confirm the drugs safety and efficacy and which AI currently cannot accelerate. Thus, Hassabiss statement highlights the revolutionary role of AI in speeding up the early, pre-clinical stages of research, but at the same time, it points to the "bottleneck" of regulatory and ethical procedures that remain a human prerogative.
