EU Commission Orders X to Retain Grok Data
On January 14, 2026, the European Commission issued a formal order to X (formerly Twitter). The regulator obliged the platform to retain all internal documents, logs, and training data related to the Grok chatbot until the end of 2026. This decision was made as part of the investigation into the deepfake generation scandal.

The EU's actions mark an escalation in the enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The Commission fears that evidence confirming the lack of moderation in Grok could be deleted. If the investigation proves systemic safety violations, X faces a fine of up to 6% of global turnover. This is a clear signal to all GenAI developers: transparency is now mandatory, not optional.
