EU Opens Formal Probe into X’s Grok Over Deepfakes
On January 26, 2026, the European Commission initiated a formal investigation into social network X and its chatbot Grok. The grounds were potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA) regarding the dissemination of sexualized deepfakes and the lack of generated content labeling.

This is the EU's first major proceeding against generative AI under the DSA. Regulators have requested information from X regarding moderation algorithms and risk assessment. Expert comment: Unlike quick blocks in Asia, the European process is procedural, but in case of proven violations, the company faces a fine of up to 6% of global turnover.
