The European Union refuses to be a digital colony of American Big Tech. The new cluster in Kajaani will increase the current AI capacity of the LUMI infrastructure tenfold. This is the physical foundation of the future `LUMI AI Factory` for independent training of large frontier models and industrial AI. For macroeconomics, this step proves that technological sovereignty is expensive: instead of renting capacity from AWS or Microsoft Azure, states are forced to burn hundreds of millions of euros of their own CAPEX to maintain control over their data and algorithms in an era of severe geopolitical division.
