German Court Sides with GEMA in Copyright Case Against OpenAI

A Munich court in Germany ruled in favor of the copyright organization GEMA in its case against OpenAI on November 11, 2025. According to Reuters, the court decreed that ChatGPT and other OpenAI models cannot reproduce copyrighted song lyrics without the appropriate licenses. OpenAI was ordered to pay damages. This decision sets a significant precedent for the regulation of generative AI in Europe, especially concerning the training of models on protected content. OpenAI has the right to appeal the decision, and both parties are preparing further statements.
