The Indonesian government has decided to block access to the AI service Grok (xAI) within the country. The reason was the distribution of generated pornographic content without the consent of the depicted individuals (NCII — Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery). Regulators stated that "absolute free speech" declared by the X platform does not exempt it from responsibility for citizens' digital safety.
This case sets an important precedent: state firewalls are starting to be used to moderate AI output. Experts warn that the lack of strict safety guardrails in Grok models could lead to a chain reaction of bans in other conservative jurisdictions and EU countries where the AI Act is in force.
