MediaTek Goes Beyond Mobile SoCs
At MWC 2026, MediaTek made a programmatic statement about its ambitions: the manufacturer no longer wants to be associated solely with cheap chips for Chinese smartphones. The focus has shifted to 6G, edge computing (Edge AI), and data center integration.

The mobile device market is stagnating, while the profit margins of AI computing are growing. MediaTek plans to take market share from Qualcomm and NVIDIA by supplying energy-efficient neural processing units (NPUs) for IoT gateways and edge servers. The idea is simple: not all tasks need to be sent to an expensive cloud; initial data processing should happen locally on cheap but smart chips. This is critically important for deploying smart cities and next-generation industrial telemetry.
