European Sovereignty: Mistral AI Raises €3B at €21B Valuation
Silicon Valley’s monopoly on artificial intelligence has deeply cracked. On September 8, 2026, French lab Mistral AI announced the closing of a €3 billion Series D round, raising its post-money valuation above €21 billion (~$24 billion). The round was led by Samsung Electronics and the Scaleup Europe Fund.

This is the largest capital raise in the history of Europe’s private tech sector. Mistral is directing the funds toward purchasing computing infrastructure and researching frontier open-weight models. For macroeconomics, this maneuver is critically important: the EU has acquired its own heavily capitalized AI player capable of competing on equal terms with OpenAI. Samsung’s participation highlights a strategic alliance between Asia and Europe to create an independent technology stack, free from the political and corporate dictates of American cloud giants.
