NASA and Google Unveil CMO-DA — an AI Assistant for Autonomous Medicine in Space

On August 11, 2025, NASA, in collaboration with Google, unveiled a breakthrough project: the Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA). This proof-of-concept system, built on Google Cloud and Vertex AI, is designed to provide autonomous medical support to astronauts during long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. In situations where communication delays with Earth make real-time consultations impossible, CMO-DA will be able to assist in diagnosing illnesses and selecting treatment methods. The system, trained on exclusive NASA medical data, has already passed tests, showing up to 88% accuracy in injury scenarios. This project is a critical step toward ensuring crew health and the success of future deep-space exploration missions.
