Nobel Laureates Lead Call for "Red Lines" on AI

More than 200 of the worlds leading figures, including 10 Nobel laureates, heads of state, and top researchers from leading AI labs, have signed the "Global Call for AI Red Lines." The petition, presented at the UN General Assembly session on September 23, 2025, demands that world governments conclude an international treaty by the end of 2026 to ban or strictly limit the most dangerous applications of AI. Among the proposed "red lines" are: a ban on creating AI systems capable of self-replication or uncontrollable self-improvement; a ban on using AI to develop biological weapons; and a complete ban on lethal autonomous weapon systems. This call is the most powerful and authoritative attempt to date to push world leaders toward creating a global AI control regime, comparable to treaties on the non-proliferation of nuclear or chemical weapons.
