Nvidia Resumes Sales of H20 AI Chips to China After US Approval

Nvidia announced on July 15, 2025, that it will resume sales of its specialized H20 AI chips to China after receiving assurances from the U.S. government that export licenses will be approved. This move, reported by Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, marks a significant shift in U.S. policy and is a major victory for Nvidia, which had actively lobbied for the easing of restrictions. The H20 chip was specifically designed by Nvidia for the Chinese market to comply with previous U.S. export controls, but its sales were also restricted in April 2025 amid tightening rules. The current decision by the U.S. administration is seen by analysts as a transition from a policy of strict restrictions to a strategy of "managed competition." The U.S. likely concluded that a total ban not only harms American companies by costing them a huge market but also incentivizes China to accelerate the development of its own technologies. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, currently visiting China, confirmed the news and expressed hope that shipments would begin soon. The resumption of H20 sales will allow Nvidia to recoup some lost revenue and strengthen its position in the Chinese market, despite growing competition from local manufacturers like Huawei. This step could lead to a partial de-escalation in the "tech war" between the U.S. and China, allowing American companies to supply China with technologies that are not at the most advanced, military-grade level.
