Against the backdrop of falling margins and missed revenue KPIs, Sam Altman is investing in the future. By providing universities with early access, free API credits, and training materials, OpenAI is building loyalty among the next generation of engineers. In 3-5 years, these students will become Team Leads and CTOs in large corporations, and they will default to choosing (and buying) the tools they grew up on. Vendor lock-in begins in the classroom.
