OpenAI Steps into Open Source, Releasing gpt-oss Models with Open Weights

On August 6, 2025, OpenAI made a surprising and powerful move by releasing two new open-weight models, gpt-oss-120B and gpt-oss-20B. For the first time in years, the company has provided the community with models comparable in power to its proprietary developments. The models, distributed under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, are focused on complex reasoning tasks. The large 120B parameter version is intended for high-performance servers, while the 20B version is optimized for running on local devices, including powerful laptops. This move is a direct competition to Metas Llama and Mistrals models and aims to democratize access to advanced AI technologies. Providing open weights allows researchers and companies to freely modify and integrate the models into their products without depending on the OpenAI API.
