OpenAI and SoftBank: $1B Energy Investment for Stargate Project

On January 10, 2026, details of an infrastructure alliance were confirmed: OpenAI and SoftBank Group are jointly investing $1 billion ($500 million each) in SB Energy. The goal is to build and operate energy infrastructure for a new 1.2 GW data center in Milam County, Texas.

This facility will be a key node in the "Stargate" project—the supercomputer required to train the next generations of models. The deal demonstrates that energy has become the bottleneck for AI. OpenAI is effectively moving toward a vertically integrated model, funding electricity generation to ensure the uninterrupted operation of its clusters.
