Fuel for Agents: SK hynix Invests $13B in AI Memory Plant
The hardware supercycle requires new production capacities. On April 22, 2026, the South Korean giant SK hynix announced a colossal investment: 19 trillion won (about $13 billion) will be directed toward building a new advanced packaging plant in Cheongju.

The project's goal is a radical increase in the production of specialized AI memory, primarily HBM chips. This move brilliantly confirms a recent Morgan Stanley report: the industry's focus is shifting from raw GPU computation to high-speed memory, which is a critical bottleneck for running heavy Agentic AI systems. Deploying the plant in South Korea is also a response to geopolitical risks and an attempt to diversify the global microelectronics supply chain.
