LLM Routing: Stripe Acquires OpenRouter Platform for $10B

FinTech is integrating into the core of AI infrastructure. On August 7, 2026, it was revealed that payment giant Stripe is in exclusive talks to acquire the OpenRouter platform. The deal is valued at approximately $10 billion (in cash and stock).

OpenRouter is a critical infrastructural gateway that allows developers to automatically route requests to various LLMs (from OpenAI to open models) in search of the best balance between price and inference quality. Stripe's purchase of such an asset is a brilliant strategic move. The FinTech giant is effectively becoming the monopoly billing operator in the world of generative APIs. By controlling the router, Stripe will be able to collect micro-commissions for every token processed by millions of B2B users. The integration of payment solutions and AI traffic creates a new monetization point, independent of exactly whose language model wins the benchmark race.
