Drivers Out: Uber and Wayve Launch First Commercial AI Taxis in London

Artificial intelligence has officially hit the streets of Europe in a commercial format. On September 3, 2026, Uber and the British startup Wayve integrated autonomous robotaxis (based on the Ford Mustang Mach-E) into the ride-hailing app in London. While a safety operator currently sits behind the wheel, the `Wayve AI Driver` algorithms are already handling the physical driving.

This is a monumental paradigm shift for Physical AI (Embodied AI). Uber, which built a multi-billion dollar corporation on the gig economy and cheap human labor, is making a direct pivot towards total hardware autonomy. Eliminating proprietary human labor will radically rewrite the margins of the logistics business. For the 140,000 Londoners who have already signed up for the test, it is an attraction, but for the global economy, it is the beginning of the end for the taxi driver profession.
