On-Chip Energy: UMC and AP Memory Tackle AI Accelerator Power Delivery
The energy hunger of the AI industry is forcing manufacturers to reinvent the fundamental bases of microelectronics. On October 22, 2026, Taiwanese companies UMC and AP Memory announced the joint development of power delivery technologies for high-performance AI systems. The core of the collaboration is the mass production of deep trench capacitors (S-SiCap Gen2D).

As the power of server GPUs grows exponentially, efficient power distribution and voltage stabilization are becoming critical scaling constraints. Classical architecture can no longer cope with heat dissipation and power consumption spikes. The companies confirmed the successful completion of the tape-out phase in the third quarter. For the hardware sector, this is a crucial R&D signal: the investment focus (CAPEX) is shifting from pure processor arithmetic to innovative power delivery solutions. The winner will be the one who can integrate energy control systems as close to the compute core as possible.
