Algorithms in the Fleet: US Navy Hires Domino Data Lab for AI Mine Detection
Computer vision is becoming the primary tool for clearing hazardous zones. On May 2, 2026, a contract was announced between the US Navy and Domino Data Lab to develop AI systems for detecting sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

This project ideologically follows the HALO Trust’s humanitarian demining initiatives reported a couple of days ago. The military is completely abandoning the manual analysis of sonar data. Domino Data Lab's algorithms will process massive arrays of information from underwater drones in real-time, identifying anomalies and hidden threats with an accuracy unattainable by a human operator. The deployment of specialized Edge AI in the fleet radically reduces risks to personnel and increases the speed of response to asymmetrical threats in critical logistical corridors.
