Social Rejection: Two-Thirds of Americans Oppose Construction of AI Data Centers
Silicon Valley's infrastructure expansion has collided with full-scale voter resistance. On October 21, 2026, a joint Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll revealed that 57% of US adults view artificial intelligence as a detriment to society, while roughly 66% are strongly opposed to the construction of new AI data centers on American soil.

The sector has found itself at the epicenter of a political storm. Rising electricity tariffs and water scarcity, driven by the cooling requirements of gigawatt server farms, have transformed data centers from symbols of progress into objects of social resentment. Macroeconimically, this represents a hard scaling barrier: public discontent is already morphing into political lawsuits and municipal zoning denials. Big Tech will not only have to foot billion-dollar bills for NVIDIA chips but also factor massive sums into CAPEX for social lobbying, the construction of autonomous power grids, and compensatory payouts to local communities.
