Media giant Warner Bros. Discovery has filed a federal lawsuit against Midjourney, the developer of the popular image generator. As reported by the Associated Press, the lawsuit, filed on September 7, 2025, accuses Midjourney of mass copyright infringement. Warner Bros. alleges that the AI model was trained on "illegal copies" of their content and that the service now allows users to create countless unauthorized images of iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, Scooby-Doo, and Bugs Bunny. The lawsuit states that Midjourney "thinks it is above the law" and deliberately fails to take measures to protect intellectual property, even though it is technically capable of doing so. Warner Bros. is seeking damages of up to $150,000 for each infringement, as well as an injunction to prevent the further use of its characters. This lawsuit represents one of the most serious legal challenges to the generative AI industry to date, as it comes from a major corporation with vast resources.
