White House Sets AI and Quantum as Top R&D Priorities for FY2027

The White House has published a memorandum outlining the budget priorities for research and development (R&D) for fiscal year 2027. The document names artificial intelligence and quantum information sciences as the top priorities, critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. The memorandum directs all federal agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE), to focus their budgets on supporting fundamental and applied research in these areas. Key directives include developing new architectures for AI, creating methods to enhance its reliability and controllability, and expanding infrastructure (testbeds, computing centers) for quantum research. This document sends a clear signal to the entire U.S. science and technology ecosystem that the government will actively invest in achieving and maintaining leadership in AI and quantum technologies.
