WTO: AI Could Increase Global Trade by Nearly 40% by 2040

The World Trade Organization (WTO) published an analytical report on September 17, 2025, stating that widespread adoption of artificial intelligence could increase the volume of global trade by 34-37% by 2040. According to WTO experts, the main drivers of this growth will be: a sharp reduction in trade costs through the optimization of logistics and supply chains; overcoming language barriers with advanced translation tools; and the automation of complex processes related to customs and regulatory compliance. However, the report emphasizes that these benefits may be unevenly distributed, leading to a widening economic gap between developed and developing countries. The WTO calls for international cooperation to develop policies that ensure fair access to AI technologies, investment in digital infrastructure, and an update of global trade rules to account for the new technological reality.
