Cloud Hedge: Anthropic Diversifies Capacity with $1.8B Akamai Contract
The creators of the Claude model are aggressively moving away from reliance on a single provider. On May 8, 2026, the signing of a multi-year agreement between Anthropic and Akamai to provide cloud computing capacity was revealed. The contract amount totaled $1.8 billion.

This move perfectly fits the strategy we analyzed recently: Anthropic (whose valuation is rumored to be approaching $1 trillion) is methodically decentralizing its hardware perimeter. Having received investments from Google, struck a deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX, and now with Akamai, the developers are hedging against vendor lock-in. For Akamai, this contract was a golden ticket, instantly reflecting in the growth of their quarterly metrics in the Cloud Infrastructure Services segment. In the inference and training market, the winner is the one whose algorithms are not tightly bound to a single "kill switch."
