Recursive Improvement: Anthropic’s AI Models Begin Autonomously Training Other Neural Networks
The industry has come extremely close to automated R&D. On August 30, 2026, the Anthropic lab introduced the Automated Alignment Researchers system based on Claude Opus 4.8. The algorithm proved its ability to autonomously search for training methods, test them, and improve other models across 10 types of alignment problems (including defense against jailbreaks and prompt injections).

During tests, the AI outperformed the one-off proposals of 28 experienced human researchers, and the methods it discovered were successfully transferred to models 4.7 times larger than the original. Although Anthropic states that this is not yet full-fledged AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), the macroeconomic signal is clear: highly paid human engineers are ceasing to be the bottleneck of development. AI labs are moving into a phase where neural networks themselves optimize the architecture of next generations, exponentially accelerating technological progress and reducing OPEX on personnel.
