End of Free Riding: Anthropic Introduces Paywall for OpenClaw Harness
Infrastructure is expensive, and Big Tech is no longer willing to pay for enthusiasts’ experiments. On April 4, 2026, Anthropic radically changed its subscription policy: the use of the popular third-party harness OpenClaw (and similar tools) to access Claude is excluded from standard limits and now requires a separate surcharge.

Technically, this is justified by protection against scraping and uncontrolled token consumption. In reality, the company is closing a loophole through which developers and power users bypassed the strict interface boundaries of the official app. This is a harsh engineering lesson for those building their pipeline on top of grey API bridges: any dependency on unofficial harnesses will sooner or later hit the vendor’s billing. If you want stability, pay for the official Enterprise API.
