Algorithms vs. Emissions: Google AI Reroutes Airlines for the Climate
Artificial intelligence is beginning to apply utilitarian solutions to global ESG challenges. On August 18, 2026, Google announced the results of `Operation Blue Skies`—a joint project with the world's largest airlines on the use of machine learning in aviation.

Google Research algorithms analyze weather layers in real time and reroute flights (by changing flight levels) to prevent the formation of contrails—clouds of condensed vapor and soot that account for up to a third of the entire aviation industry's climate impact. This is a brilliant macroeconomic case study of AI application in the physical world. For airlines (the B2B sector), integrating such predictive systems allows them to cut fuel costs (OPEX) by avoiding hazardous zones and simultaneously meet strict government decarbonization quotas without buying new, ultra-expensive aircraft.
