Sovereign Silicon: Japan Pours Another $4B into Rapidus AI Chips
The geopolitical race for computing independence requires continuous capital injections. On April 11, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved the allocation of an additional 631.5 billion yen (about $4 billion) to the national semiconductor manufacturer Rapidus.

These funds will be directed exclusively toward R&D and the deployment of lines for printing advanced 2-nanometer chips, which are critical for data centers and AI clusters. This decision fits perfectly into the current geopolitical context. Tokyo does not want to be held hostage by US export quotas or possible disruptions in supplies from Taiwan's TSMC. By creating a sovereign foundry, Japan is securing an independent physical base for its future AI models and robotic systems, cementing its status as a major technological superpower.
