This is an admission of the critical shortage of computing resources in the industry. Despite Meta's purchases from AMD and Nvidia, its own infrastructure is insufficient for parallel training of multiple giant models. Google, which has long considered Meta a direct competitor, is now monetizing its leadership in proprietary chip development. The deal shows that in the race for AGI, infrastructure realities are more important than corporate enmity. Meta is paying billions to a competitor to avoid falling behind in neural network training speeds.
