Autopilot Braking Distance: Tesla Faces Regulatory Skepticism in Europe
The export of American autonomy to Europe has stalled over legislation. On May 5, 2026, it was reported that the Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) system faced severe skepticism from European regulators.

Although the Dutch authority RDW granted Elon Musk's company temporary approval, the system's status was forcibly downgraded. In the EU, Tesla FSD legally remains an advanced "driver assistance system" (ADAS), not a fully-fledged autopilot. The user is obliged to keep their hands on the wheel and bear full legal responsibility for incidents. This case presents a stark contrast to the recent successes of China's DeepRoute.ai, which is scaling its autonomous systems by the hundreds of thousands. The technological dominance of AI is bottlenecked not by the power of neural networks, but by conservative European compliance and the fear of physical risks (AI Safety).
